BARNEY

TAYLORSVILLE, NC.....It seems like no one cares about their beloved pets anymore. Keeping them safe and out of harm's way is not the norm. When they get hurt and need medical care, people turn a blind eye. I am so disheartened by the inhumanity I see lately that if I did not get to see the Good in the World by the Followers of Noah's Arks Rescue, I would think all the World had gone mad. The level of Neglect we are seeing is beyond comprehension. Saving an animal has become almost an impossible task. You fight with individuals to sign over their pups, and then you fight with Animal Control to get them to not put an animal down before their time is up. It is a very sad time we live in, and the saddest part of all is the very animals that give us unconditional Love and Support have become disposable.

Sweet Barney is a six-year-old chihuahua that we were contacted about that had been surrendered after he was attacked by another dog. The attack was so vicious that he has large gaping wounds and his carotid artery was left dangling from his neck. If that artery had been nicked or torn, he would have bled out very quickly. I went round and round with the Animal Control person for her lack of care for this pup. I explained we are beyond full and I would like to help but would need a foster and asked if she would please keep looking. I don't think she tried very hard for Barney because all I heard was that if you do not take him, we are going to euthanize over and over again until I finally said yes.

According to her report and after she talked to the vet that had seen Barney, his leg was torn open, and a ligament was damaged and his leg needed to be removed. I said that should be something another Rescue could easily do. Amputation was not a big deal or too costly, and he could go on to live a pretty normal Life. They were not even going to try to think of saving this dog. It was me, or he was going to be PTS right then. I agreed and was mad as a hatter no one was working on saving this little dog.

Barney arrived Carolina Veterinary Specialists in unimaginable shape. What she had described was nothing compared to what we saw. For starters, Barney was in Shock and what they said was a ligament was his Carotid Artery hanging out of his neck. He had also become septic while he was in their care or while at the Vet's Office. Barney had been attacked by another dog and was fighting for his Life. The Family that had him should have been charged with Animal Cruelty for not getting him immediate Medical Care. The Vet that said he should have his leg removed was also wrong. His leg was not the issue.

I am so glad I said I would take this sweet boy because if he had lived, it would have only been for a very short period because they would have removed a leg that did not need to be removed and what they thought was his ligament was an artery. Barney would have died from the surgery and the shock to his system.

Barney wants nothing more than to give lots of kisses during this terrible time. He is at Death's Door, and he showers every with Love. Barney went through Emergency Surgery during the night to repair the gaping wounds he had and to get him stable. Unfortunately, he is critical because his body had gone Septic from the raging infection he had. He is on 24-hour care in ICU to see if we can get him thorough this. His vitals are monitored constantly to make sure they can compensate for any drop in pressure or if he starts to crash again. We are doing everything possible to save him, and now we are just going to have to sit back and let the ICU Team do their job.
