LENNY

COLLEGE PARK, GA…..Sweet Lenny was abandoned behind a store in College Park in horrible condition.  After a couple of days, someone finally called Animal Control to come and get him.   Lenny is a two year old Pitbull that appears to have been used as a Bait Dog for dog fighting.  He is covered with bite marks and  large gashes all over his body.  The worst places are on his legs, face and ears.  The condition he was found in leads us to believe he was dropped off right after a fight.    Sweet Lenny did not stand a chance at coming out alive once he was picked up given the condition he was found in.   The more injuries these innocent dogs have, the more people shy away from helping them.  Our Society would rather see the animals put down that to offer them love and compassion and much needed medical care.  It breaks our hearts every day because we get e-mails like this all the time.  We cannot take them all but we do out best to help the worst cases so other Rescues can step up for the ones that do not require as much medical care.

Lenny has stolen the hearts of everyone.  He is very confused by what has happened and is very timid.   He is slowly beginning to trust us but still is not sure what is going to happen next.   We are so used to the mental turmoil these innocent dogs go through that we expect them to be very confused when we get them.   Lenny is sweet and loving and doesn't seem to have any interest in other dogs at this time.  The dogs that are used as Bait Dogs are the ones that love and trust everyone.

The tests have come back that Lenny is anemic and loaded with parasites.  Parasites and blood loss have both contributed to his anemia.  The biggest part of his medical is going to be doing surgery on his wounds  and moving skin around so we can fill in the large gashes he has.  He has to have his wounds cleaned daily to get rid of the infection and allow the skin to granulate in.   Only time will tell us the areas that are not filling in from either infection or necrosis where the skin has died.   Lenny is such a sweet boy that he is not giving us any problems with bandage changes or his surgical procedures.   Right now, our main focus is teaching him to trust and to realize nothing bad is ever going to happen to him again.   I can't even imagine the sheer terror that consumes an animal that is put in a situation where he has to fight for his Life.    Dogs that are trained for it, have adapted.  The either adapt or they do not survive.   It is not their natural born instinct to fight.   it is something they are trained to do.  Bait Dogs are family pets that are used to train fighting dogs.   The people that do this do not want their dog injured in the process of the training.  Lenny is very lucky to be alive.

Lenny will be in the hospital for quite a while healing from the injuries he sustained.  Once he is well, he will then be re-socialized and trained so he can live out a normal life with a loving Family.
