LICORICE

Latest Updates

SAVANNAH, GA........Sweet Licorice is a 16 week old Lab puppy that was abandoned with his siblings as a baby at a Vets office in Savannah, GA.   The Vet found a home for him with a sweet couple in the area that were looking for a puppy to adopt.   All was great for the first month until they brought this adorable puppy back in with two broken rear legs with compound fractures.  They went on describing what happened to him.   As it turned out, this was not a responsible Family to have a puppy.   They were out running around with Licorice and allowing him to play in the mud after a lot of rain.  When it came time to go home, the Husband or boyfriend did not want to get the cab of his truck dirty, so he demanded that Licorice be put in the bed of the truck.    After several miles, this sweet puppy did what a lot of young dogs do, he jumped out.  He was immediately hit by a car.   The young Lady had been watching the puppy when it happened.   If she had not been watching, Licorice would have probably been run over several more times and died.

We hear this scenario all the time.   This is why we do not allow any of our dogs to ride in the back of a pick-up without being in a kennel.  We also have the new Owners sign a line on our Contract that states this.   Animals see something that peaks their interest and jump out all the time.   The couple could not afford the surgery, so they wanted Licorice euthanized. We were contacted because Licorice needed a Specialist to fix his legs.    I could not turn my back on this little pup after seeing the pics and his x-rays.   Licorice was rushed to CVRC in Charleston where surgery was done, and plates were put on his legs.  Since both rear legs were broken and his pelvis was fractured, he had to have multiple surgeries over the course of the week.

Our little bundle of sweetness is recovering from the surgeries.   He has lots of rehab ahead to allow the legs to heal and the bones to grow together.   Between Jelly Bean, Baby Ruth, and Licorice the hospital looks like a ward for puppies that have all been run over.     There is no excuse for stupidity.  For all I know, they could have all been in the bed of a truck and jumped out.   Think before you put your Member of the Family in harms way.   We are their Guardians to love and protect, not throw around like a stuffed animal.   Accidents happen, but these could have all been prevented.

Little Licorice is the sweetest most adorable black Lab that is going to make someone's heart sing.    He will be in the hospital for another month healing and can go to a NEW home once we feel his legs are strong enough.   His bills are extensive because of all the surgeries and rehab.  Please, help us with his medical bills so we can continue to save more animals like Licorice that have been tossed around with no regard for their safety.
