PETEY

Sweet Petey has improved a little bit.  We have him in a medically induced coma to prevent him from throwing a clot from the bleed he had in his brain.   Because of the brain trauma, he cannot see at this time.   What usually happens in humans is that when the swelling goes down, the eyesight usually comes back.   He has improved enough to where he will respond to our voices.   He was having lots of seizures when we first got him.   He is now on anti-seizure medication that is helping him with the seizures.   We do have lots of positives.   The urine from his catheter is now flowing without any blood in it.  He has stopped bleeding internally.   He also no longer requires oxygen.  He is breathing well enough on his own.  We are keeping him in an oxygen chamber with the door open in case that changes.  Moving him could cause him to throw a clot which is what we are doing everything to prevent.

I know all of this has to be very scary and disheartening for a lot of people.   We are all remaining very optimistic about Petey.  Animals can and do survive head injuries all the time.  You just have to keep them calm and sedated to allow the swelling to go down and the brain to start working normally.  Animals usually crash within a 5-8 day window.  If they make it through that time frame, their chances improve greatly.    Petey is getting lots of love and care while he is in his coma.  He will open his eyes when he hears your voice and allow you to love on him.  He does not lack for love and comfort during this time.   Petey is in ICU with being closely monitored for any signs of distress.

I am committed to giving him the best chance possible to come out of this.   If he does not show any improvement over the next five days, then we will have to say good-bye to this sweet dog knowing that we did everything possible to save him.   No one has come forward looking for our dear boy.   He is with his new NAR Family now, and we are giving him the best possible chance to survive this terrible ordeal.   If he does not make it, he will pass knowing he was loved and cherished.

We are still in desperate need of donations for our little Trooper.    Anything you can spare would be greatly appreciated.  Please, keep Petey in your prayers.  I have posted a video of him trying to bark on his main page.
