❤️ REMY WAS DOING AMAZING, UNTIL SUDDENLY HE WASN'T ❤️
Our precious Remy was doing amazing. We were so excited for him. He could run around and play in our rehab facility without having to go out into the horrible heat and struggle to breathe. He could walk outside to do his business, come right back in, and spend the rest of his day playing comfortably in the air conditioning. Life in Remy's world was amazing—until suddenly, it wasn't.
One afternoon during his nap, we noticed Remy wasn't his normal happy-go-lucky self. It could have been nothing, but given everything he had been through with his surgeries—and the fact that he is a Frenchie—we were immediately on RED ALERT. He was still doing okay, just not as chipper as usual. By the following morning, I knew something wasn't right. Then he suddenly began vomiting, and his head and nose sounded congested.
We rushed him to the hospital, where chest x-rays showed the beginning stages of pneumonia. Cultures were taken, additional x-rays were done later in the day, and Remy was immediately started on IV fluids and antibiotics. We knew exactly where this could be headed and did not want to waste a minute.
By Day 2, Remy had developed full-blown pneumonia. His nose was running and his breathing had become compromised. Thankfully, he never reached the point of needing oxygen, but for a French Bulldog, pneumonia can become life-threatening incredibly fast. Our precious boy had to remain hospitalized while we waited and prayed for the antibiotics to begin working.
Pneumonia is an immediate and potentially life-threatening emergency in short-snouted breeds like French Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers. Their anatomy already restricts their ability to breathe normally, leaving them with very little reserve when their lungs become compromised.
These dogs are also prone to gagging, regurgitation, and vomiting because of the pressure created by their abnormal airways. When stomach contents are accidentally inhaled into the lungs, aspiration pneumonia can develop rapidly. This is what happened to our precious Remy. These little dogs compensate for their breathing difficulties every day—until something happens and suddenly they can't.
Thankfully, we caught Remy's pneumonia early. Because we started antibiotics immediately, we were able to keep him from becoming much worse. His latest chest x-rays are improving, his breathing has returned to normal, and our precious boy is finally on the mend.
The surgery Remy had a month ago to shorten his elongated soft palate also made an incredible difference. Opening his airway gave him the extra breathing room he desperately needed when pneumonia struck and helped us get control of the situation before his breathing became even more compromised.
We are incredibly grateful that Remy is getting better, but we are still raising funds for his original life-saving surgeries—and now we have the added expense of his emergency hospitalization and treatment for pneumonia.
Remy has already fought so hard for this beautiful new life. We want him to finally know what it feels like to be healthy, comfortable, safe and loved.
