GREENSBORO, NC…When Animal Control reaches out asking if we can help a dog removed from an owner, my first step is always to understand the situation. If there is abuse, that animal will never go back. If it is hardship, I do everything I can to help reunite them.

Tiny is an 8-year-old Chihuahua who weighed 9 pounds when he came into our care. Animal Control was called after Tiny was not receiving medical care following a car accident several weeks earlier. Tiny belonged to an elderly man who was struggling to care for himself and was ultimately hospitalized. He made the heartbreaking but loving decision to relinquish Tiny so he could get the medical care he desperately needed.

By the time we received Tiny, he had completely stopped using his right rear leg. He had significant muscle atrophy and was living with constant pain. We transferred him to CVRC, where he was evaluated by the surgical team to determine if his leg could be saved or if amputation would be necessary.

Imaging revealed that Tiny’s right hip had been severely damaged from the accident. The best option was an FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) — a surgery that removes the head and neck of the femur to eliminate painful bone-on-bone contact. Over time, the body forms a “false joint” using muscle and scar tissue, allowing for pain-free movement. Recovery requires dedicated physical therapy, and our biggest challenge will be helping Tiny relearn how to use a leg he stopped trusting long ago.

Dr. Steve Garnet performed Tiny’s surgery and was able to repair as much muscle and tendon damage as possible. The surgery went beautifully, and Tiny handled anesthesia like a champ. Now it’s all about rehab, patience, and helping him regain confidence in his leg.

While we wish we could have kept Tiny with his owner, it simply wasn’t possible. What we can say is that Tiny was clearly loved. He was at a healthy weight and had no other medical issues. Sadly, no family members were able to step in for him.

Tiny is incredibly special. He wants nothing more than to play, snuggle, and give endless kisses. He is going to make an amazing companion once he finishes healing.

We need your help.  Tiny’s surgical and hospital bills are significant and continue to grow. Veterinary care costs have risen dramatically, and cases like Tiny’s quickly add up to several thousands of dollars.

If you are able, please consider donating toward Tiny’s surgery and hospital care. Every single dollar helps us continue saying “yes” when dogs like Tiny need us most.

Thank you for always standing behind these animals and the second chances you help make possible. 💙💙💙
