BEAUFORT, SC..... No matter how much Beaufort County Animal Care Services does to help the people and their animals in Beaufort County, the Owners rarely take their advice and often do exactly as they please with their animals, only to regret it when something bad happens. Then they are back begging for help again.

Poor Dee Dee is a young, beautiful Black & Tan German Shepherd, two years old.  She has already been used to produce a litter of puppies.  BCACS was initially contacted by an older man who wanted to surrender two of Dee Dee's puppies.  BCACS said they would not take the puppies unless Mom and Dad were spayed and neutered.  The man finally agreed to allow that to happen.  The surrendered puppies were placed immediately in wonderful homes.

The dogs were initially tethered outside and later released to run free.  Unfortunately, dogs that are allowed to run free run out into the road, chasing things and getting hit by automobiles, which is precisely what happened to Dee Dee three weeks after she was spayed.  The owner called BCACS again, stating that he did not have any money for surgery and that they could take Dee Dee.

I know I'm a broken record when I say this, but people should not get animals that they are not prepared to keep safe and care for in the event of an accident.   BCACS had two options: put Dee Dee down since surgery was beyond what they could do or call me and BEG for help.  I say beg because I had already taken several of their dogs that I had not even had time to post for.

The next time someone offers a free MRI, I am going to submit my brain to see why I keep taking these pups when we are clearly beyond full.  I agreed and had Dee Dee taken to CVRC in Charleston, SC, for surgery to put a plate in and hopefully save her leg.  Our sweet girl was in the hospital for a while recovering from her surgery, and then we brought her to our Rehab Facility to heal.

Unfortunately, Dee Dee developed a nasty infection right after surgery that compromised everything we had just done.  We now had to treat her for Pseudomonas aeruginosa.  Pseudomonas infections in dogs after orthopedic surgery can be a serious complication, potentially leading to delayed healing, implant failure, and even amputation in severe cases.

Infections like this are characterized by symptoms such as swelling, redness, pain, and discharge from the surgical site. Treatment typically involves systemic antibiotics, local antiseptic therapy, and, in some cases, implant removal.   We had just paid a fortune to put the implant in and did not want to have to remove it so soon.  Treating the infection and lots of prayers was our best best.  We also had to keep Dee Dee in quarantine since this bacteria was opportunistic, and any dog with skin issues or open wounds could get it.

I waited a while to write this post because I wasn't sure of the outcome.  We have just done another x-ray of Dee Dee's leg, and it is healing nicely; there are no longer any signs of infection after being on antibiotics for almost a month.  Dee Dee is not completely healed but is out of quarantine and no longer requires the strenuous measures we had to take to save her leg and her Life.

Our precious pup is a small Black and Tan German Shepherd that is as sweet as can be.  Once she heals, she will make an amazing Family Pet.  She is gentle in all the best ways of a German Shepherd.   We love this special girl and are so glad we stepped up to save her.

We now have to raise the funds to pay her massive bills.  We are significantly behind in raising funds for all our animals because we are too busy attending to their medical and emotional needs.  I remember when I would post for an animal a week.  That was before we had the Rehab Facility and Fetch Mkt.  There is not enough time in the day to do everything that needs to be done.  Our top priority, and always will be, is the quality of Life for the animals in our care.  That comes first, and then when I get a free hour, I do a post and BEG for Funds.

Please Donate toward Dee Dee's medical expenses and rehab.  We have many more animals to post, but for now, we are focusing on Dee Dee to pay her bills and find her a fantastic home.

Thanks for helping us with our pups and being part of the Noah's Arks Rescue Village.
