PETEY

Thanksgiving week brought lots of tragedies to Animals.   Because the shelters are closed, far too many animals are euthanized during this time of year.  If an animal is hurt and needs help, there is no place for them to go.   Over the past week, we took in four new dogs that have all been seriously hurt from either starvation or being hit by a car.   Losing Camilla put us all over the top of sadness for all the animals.

On a brighter note, sweet Petey has come out of his COMA.   Petey has made it through the first phase of his recovery.  This is when the bleeding into the space around his brain can cause irritation, seizures, and other problems.  Now, he is reaching the end of the period in which we are concerned about ‘vasospasm’.  This is the period in which the small vessels that supply blood to the brain ‘clamp’ down in response to the previous bleeding and starve the brain of oxygen and nutrients.  We’ve had him on medications and iv drips to prevent this, and, so far, it looks like our efforts have paid off.  Petey will be coming off all of his iv medications today.  He’ll still be getting a lot of pill medications for the pain and other problems.  But now we can begin to shift our focus to the fractured left elbow and right paw.  Once those problems are dealt with we will begin to look at the heartworm disease and make decisions concerning that condition.  But Petey’s brain is still our #1 priority until we’re sure that he is ‘out of the woods’.  He is also beginning to get his eyesight back.   It isn't 100% yet, but we feel it will continue to improve.

Petey has been in ICU since we picked him up 10 days ago.   His bills are through the roof because of that.  He has to remain in ICU until the next phase passes which we just described.   PLEASE, donate whatever you can so we can keep giving him the best possible chance to survive this.   Once, he has gone through the brain phase, we then have to focus on his fractures and his upcoming surgeries.  Thanks for caring and being part of his Journey to Survive and Thrive.
