BACCHUS

HILTON HEAD, SC.......Sweet Bacchus is a beautiful 7-year-old English Bulldog that was picked up as a stray after being hit by a car in Hilton Head.  He was in such terrible shape that he was taken to a the Vet in the area.   We were contacted after it was determined that Bacchus had a spinal injury that required more than they could do.  Bacchus was on a stay hold during the time the vet had him.   As hard as it is to believe, no one came looking for this amazing dog.  It isn't like you see English Bulldogs running all over Hilton Head.  I still have a hard time understanding that someone was not looking for him.   It has to be someone that was either visiting or lives on Hilton Head.

We offered to step up for Bacchus to make sure he got the best possible chance of walking again.   This sweet boy was in terrible shape.   Bacchus was hit at a very high speed and spun around several times in the process, according to his Neurologist.   He has several badly damaged areas in his spine.  One is in his neck, and the other is on his lower back where a disc is ruptured.   He does have pain perception in his legs but is unable to hold his weight up or walk at this time.  In addition to his spinal injuries, he has large gases on his legs that are requiring extensive wound care.  The areas cannot be closed at this time but have to start to granulate in    One of his legs is fractured and will require surgery.  Bacchus has so much swelling from his spinal injuries that it is unclear if he will need spinal surgery.  The area in his neck appears to be stable, but that could change once the swelling goes down.  Even though he is in terrible shape, he is still as sweet as can be.   Needless to say, he is being pampered from sun up to sun down because he has such a wonderful disposition.  Bacchus is incontinent now because of his injuries.  We feel that will change once his swelling goes down, and his pain level has decreased.

Our dear boy is one big mess and lucky to be alive based on how he looks.   He will have to remain in the hospital until he is stable enough to have his surgeries and then will be transferred to a rehab facility.  He has a long road ahead but one that we will be travelling with him.  Whatever he needs, he will get to make sure he has the best possible outcome.
