SAVANNAH, GA.....China is a beautiful emaciated pitbull that is four years old and about to have her last breath yesterday. We were contacted late yesterday afternoon by one of our Special Vets in Savannah that we work with daily. A young girl brought in her pitbull saying she wasn't feeling well and that even though she had been spayed three years ago, she thought she was pregnant. What the Vet saw immediately was a very sick dog that was barely able to move. Her abdomen was swollen, but she was skin and bones everywhere else. Her gums were almost white, and she barely had a pulse. After further tests, it was explained to the girl that her dog was dying from Heartworms and was going to have to be put to sleep if she could not get her to a Specialists immediately. The girl did not have a clue what she was talking about and explained her dog had not had any medical care or preventative.
We were contacted to see if we would consider helping China. She would have to be euthanized immediately otherwise, and there was still no chance she would survive the trip to the Specialist in Raleigh, NC. The girl signed China over to the Clinic, and we immediately jumped into action to save this wonderful dog that was hanging on by a thread. The specialists were contacted, and procedures were started to stabilize China as best as possible for the Journey. We then called everyone until we found people to do part of the transports to get her to NC State. The Heart Specialists were all on call and ready for her when she arrived about 2:00 AM. Everyone jumped into action to see what needed to be done first to save her and stabilize her. In addition to all this, China's belly was loaded with parasites, and she had fluid in her abdomen that had to be slowly drained. During the night, she was given a transfusion to give her the only chance she had to survive this. The Specialists have been working non-stop to save this wonderful dog. They are not going to be able to do any surgical removals at this time because of her condition, but they are going to have to start killing off the heartworms.
China has suffered tremendously for the last year with all she has going on now. A kid's ignorance has been a slow death wish. Thank the Lord, she finally brought China to a vet. One more day and she would probably be dead. This wonderful dog is in ICU at NC State with everyone pulling for her. I just hope and pray that we got her there in time. An American Express Card and a few determined Souls can make just about anything happen if you are determined enough to save an animal. Please, help us with her extensive medical bills. China will have to remain in ICU during her entire time at NC State to give her the best possible chance of survival. Please, keep our sweet girl in your prayers.
