CLAYTON COUNTY, GA.....Sweet CRUSTY is a 3 year old Staffordshire Terrier / Pitbull Mix that was picked up as a stray and brought to the local shelter.  The condition he was brought in was so bad that they immediately Redlined him to be euthanized.  We were his Last Resort when no came through for him.  As you can tell from the pictures, he was severely neglected.  Based on the way he came in, he has had Demodex since he was young.  His condition was so bad that he developed secondary infections that caused his skin to bleed and spread all over his body.  The problem with having an infection for so long is that it gets into your bloodstream and your body becomes septic.  Our big boy is skinny but is swollen from all the inflammation.  He is also loaded with every parasite imaginable which is not allowing him to gain any weight and is also making him anemic.  The good news is that he is Heartworm negative. He also has ear infections which we are clearing up with antibiotics.   We have had Crusty for several weeks and he still has a long way to go before his skin  heals.  He is a hot mess but is getting more comfortable each day.  He is getting lots and lots of soothing baths which he has decided is the best part of the day.  When you are this uncomfortable, any relief is welcome.  Our dear boy loves being spoiled and pampered.  When he first came in he was very shy and scared.  He has now learned to trust us and has started to get excited when he sees anyone coming to give him kisses and hugs.  As Crusty heals, we will be introducing him to more dogs.  So far, we have not seen any aggression.  He seems to just want to play and give kisses.

Sweet Crusty is doing so much better.  His skin has begun to heal and his infections are all gone.  It is now going to take time to get rid of all the mites he has which will take another six weeks.  We are continuing with his baths and medical potions which are doing wonders for this sweet dog.   Now that Crusty is feeling better he just wants to hang out and play.  It will be a few more weeks before he completes his behavioral evaluation.  Right now it appears he does not like cats but seems to be indifferent to other dogs and loves everyone.  We will know more once his skin has improved as to what his true disposition is going to be.  Right now, he seems to be a pretty mellow boy.
