WAYCROSS, GA.....DUCHIE is a 10 month old adorable Pitbull that has had a terrible start in life.  We pulled her from the Okefenokee Humane Society after being contacted about the most adorable little dog that was having difficulty walking.  I got in touch with the Manager to see if this little one was safe or in danger of being put to sleep and exactly what had happened to her.  After listening to his information, I then had him e-mail me the information just to make sure, I did not misunderstand him.  The entire story sounded very confusing.  It appears that she was found in an abandoned car around 2:30 in the morning in Ware County, GA that was in a ditch.  She was picked up by the Sheriff’s Office and transferred to Animal Control.  It appears the car had been in an accident earlier and the occupant abandoned Duchie and the vehicle.  Using the tag on the car the Sheriff’s office tried to locate the owner.   They have yet to find the person that did this but are still looking.  When Animal Control first saw Duchie they knew something was terribly wrong with her rear quarters.  She was having a very difficult time walking and her legs were all messed up.  Our sweet little girl has three breaks in her left rear leg and one break in her right rear leg.  Her breaks appear to have all occurred at different times based on the way they have healed and the callous formation.  She has one that is more recent and the others look like they happened when she was younger.  She was not hurt during this accident because it is not a fresh break.  We do not have a clue what someone has been doing to this adorable little pup.  If she was in an accident, well it had to have been a lot of accidents based on the timeframe of the healing.  All we know is that she is too sweet and loving to be put down.   She is a young pup of 9 months that has had something horrible happen to her and then to be abandoned in the condition she was found in is horrible.  She has had one major operation with an Orthopedic Surgeon to correct as much as they could and then will probably have to have more.  The hardest part of doing this kind of surgery is all of the callous formation that is now in the way of normal joint function.  It takes a specialist to figure this out and to give her the best possible outcome.  Duchie is a wonderful little dog that loves everyone.  We have to get her legs corrected before she can be adopted.  She will make a wonderful member of the Family for anyone.  Look at the smile on her face.  How one that has had so much pain and suffering can smile and be happy is a testament to the unconditional love animals have to give.

DUCHIE had major surgery on both of her rear legs to get back her ability to walk.  All of the breaks have been  repaired  and the callouses have been removed.  Right now, she is not happy about walking or using her legs.  That is normal because of the pain.  She is kept comfortable but not too comfortable so she does not re-injure herself.  She is scheduled to start doing rehab this coming week to get back her range of motion.  She will have to have about 4 weeks of therapy before she can begin to walk normally.  The hard part is done and now it is just a matter of time for her to fully recover.  We are still taking donations for her extensive surgery and rehab.

Duchie is doing wonderful with her rehab and hydrotherapy.  Her legs are getting stronger each day.  We have her with a wonderful Foster that is taking her back and forth to her sessions and is doing extra rehab at home.  She is in a loving home environment where she can be part of a family and socialize with other dogs.  She is still on some restricted exercise but is able to do a lot more than she has been allowed to do in the past.  She loves to be free to run around and play with the other dogs. Duchie gets along with everyone and loves all animals. She will make a wonderful member of any family and loves kids.  We are still looking for that special Family for her.  Please, consider her if you are looking for the perfect family dog.
