ORANGEBURG, SC….We were contacted by Orangeburg Animal Control about a tiny Pug / Chihuahua Mix they were called to pick up that had been attacked by 4 dogs.   This little pup is the size of a sack of sugar so I was expecting something horrible when I got the message.   That was not the case.   Bailey has one tiny puncture would on the side of her neck that has paralyzed her.    She cannot walk at all.  She was definitely not attacked by a pack of dogs but what did happen to her is a mystery.   I agreed to take her since she was going to be PTS and see if there was anything I could do.

Bailey was immediately taken to our Neurosurgeon in Charleston where an MRI was done.  She is paralyzed because she has a fracture of the 3rd Vertebrae in her neck.   She has no other wounds on her at all.   The surgeon does not want to do surgery right now until all the swelling has come down in the neck to see if she will regain any of the function in her legs.   She has feeling in her legs but is not able to use them.   Feeling is a very good thing for a dog that is paralyzed.  It means there is hope her neck and spine can possibly be repaired.    Right now we are doing extensive physical therapy at the Speciality Hospital to keep her legs from atrophying while her neck is healing.    Over the next two weeks, we will be able to determine if we will be able to restore her ability to walk.   Right now, we are not sure.   She is able to go to the bathroom with us holding her up which is also a positive.    We believe all these positives will give us a good outcome.

Bailey is so darn adorable that she just melts your heart laying there.   Right now she cannot even raise up her head because of the injury but we feel she should be able to soon.   She is so sweet and tiny that you just want to put her in your arm and hold her all day long to keep her safe.    The next week is going to be critical for her.   It is going tell us if she will ever be able to walk again.  Keep our little Angel in your prayers so she can regain her strength and courage to overcome whatever it is that happened to her.   It is almost like someone stuck a pencil in her neck.   If this was from a dog bite, there would be another bite mark on the opposite side of the neck to cause the fracture from the force.   There is just one puncture.   Whatever happened to Bailey, I am sure was terrifying given the condition she is in now.
