My heart aches for this beautiful dog we are calling Timber. CVRC did X-rays yesterday and discovered he did not have any broken bones and had not been hit by a vehicle. The wounds on his body are because he has been starved and was too weak to move his body around. He developed pressure sores that became necrotic.
He was covered with fleas that had inflamed most of the skin on his back, causing an infection. Every wound and inflamed area of skin was covered with maggots eating away at the dead tissue. His anemia is due to all the parasites that have been feeding on this poor pup. He received a blood transfusion late last night that went into the early morning hours. His blood values did improve, but he still has a long way to go to return to normal.
Timber is still too weak to stand. The most significant issues we are dealing with are that he is borderline septic, and he is very close to having re-feeding syndrome. He can only have tiny meals until his electrolytes stabilize. I want to give Timber the best possible chance, but I am realistic enough to know that even with the best medical care, we may be too late.
Timber is in the best possible ER facility for a dog in his condition. He has a team of specialists and surgeons who are overseeing every aspect of his medical care. He is in the ICU and will remain there for as long as it takes to turn his life around. The minute I feel like he does not have any fight left in him to live, I will lovingly allow him to cross over the Rainbow Bridge.
I am taking it minute by minute with Timber. CVRC is aware of my concerns regarding his quality of life. We have to be making progress that Timber can sustain. Tomorrow will be a big day regarding how much food we can safely get into him. If he is tolerating his feeding, we will consider doing surgery on his wounds to rid his body of as much infection as possible. Once that is done, he will have the best possible chance of surviving.
Please, keep Timber in your prayers. The hardest part for Timber was surviving the horrible, painful neglect he endured. Timber was being eaten alive by all the parasites on his body. Once we rid his body of the parasites, he will finally have a chance at living.
Timber's medical bills are through the roof, and we just started his medical treatment. We are in this for the long haul until Timber lets us know he is done. I never put a price tag on a dog's life and am not going to start with Timber. Please continue to donate until he is out of the hospital.
